„Black is one of the oldest glass bottle colors, used by early Romans throughout their empire. Black glass from this time period is often actually a very dark olive green or olive amber, and was usually made by adding iron oxide during the manufacturing process. Thick walls and iron oxide made the glass strong and kept out light that might damage wine, ale, cider, oil, or other liquids during shipment and storage. Early black glass pieces, possibly Spanish, can be found in Seaham, England, today."
- The Beachcombing Magazin (2019). Black Sea Glass.

„The glass works was founded by John Candlish in 1853 and it later merged with the adjoining Londonderry Glassworks on its south side. The works was, until 1921, the largest glass bottle works in Britain. […]Bottles were shipped to London and Europe from here and much glass waste of several differing colours was thrown into the sea and after decades enduring the constant weathering work of waves the glass waste is regularly washed ashore in jewel-like beads.”

„Sailors folklore tells the story that the sea glass are the tears shed by mermaids caused by the jealous wrath of Neptune when they fall in love with a sailor, or else they are their tears shed when a sailor drowns.”
